The series is based loosely on the life of Ray Ramono, who plays the show's main character, Raymond Barone. Raymond is a sportswriter for a newspaper, and he and his family, along with his extended family, live in Lynbrook, Long Island, New York. Raymond's wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton), is a dedicated wife and mother who is often as frustrated and resentful of her husband's way of dealing with life's situations as she is of his overbearing family.

Raymond's older brother, Robert (Brad Garrett), is a New York City police officer who still feels that Raymond receives the most attention from their parents, Frank and Marie. Frank (Peter Boyle) is cantankerous and stubborn, and Marie overprotects Raymond and takes any opportunity to criticize Debra.
